Sunsets over the ocean will be a daily visual fix for the owners of Giorgi’s newest
City Beach build. The architecture of this seaside entertainer is a masterful collision
of two different design cues – geometric and organic – inspired by panoramic coastal views.
The elements connect to form this brand new and substantial seaside home by Giorgi,
fronting an unbroken view to the City Beach coastline and gracefully blending
the relationship between its curves and straight lines.
The owners’ brief was for a modern home to be designed and built with a casual and effortless
living style using open plan areas and clean lines suitable for their family of three daughters.
Giorgi’s award-winning architect Gavin Hestelow designed the home to appear to hover
in mid-air “like a butterfly”. Splayed walls and raked ceilings diminish outward to give
a sense of infinity while capturing views as far as the eye can see.
The considerable 25 metre frontage combined with the home’s extensive scale of engineering
allowed us to maximise clever design to fulfil setback requirements and use the additional
one metre of height permissible within the zone.
The elevation’s end-to-end top floor architecture is the jewel in the crown as it also kicks
back at the rear of the purpose-built curved, vertical concrete tilt panels in one smooth
uninterrupted sweep to maximise the upper floor footprint.
All columns have been concealed from view to make the upper floor cantilevered concrete
balcony appear to float over the angular alpine stone wall at the base.
The delicate and continual play of form and shape resumes with the deliberate interruption
of the north side’s upper external wall featuring a tactically placed curvature to break
the straight span and create interest.
The home flows through three levels anchored by a six-car garage and multi-purpose room
with the first of five ensuites or powder rooms located throughout the home.
Designed to play the perfect host, the home features an activity room and bar at the front
with three main walls of stackable sliding glass doors that can be opened to the adjoining
alfresco, barbecue, sunken fire pit, pizza oven and wrap around verandah.
Beyond the activity room, an open deck area leads to a raised pool
and spa located for ocean views.
Ensuring the elements are controlled as much as possible, all west-facing windows are
double-glazed and have been combined with louvres for efficient cross-flow ventilation
The owners intend their new residence to be their forever home, so the upper level has been
designed as a stand-alone apartment with direct lift access.
Executing the combination of straight and curved elements is not an easy feat to achieve
successfully with its associated engineering complexities, yet the owners –
and the team at Giorgi – are delighted with the outcome.
